On September 30th, 2023, the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) was buzzing with excitement and curiosity. The reason? The “Crazy about Chemistry” outreach program was in full swing.
‘Crazy about Chemistry’ is one of the core outreach programmes at ICIQ and it aims to foster scientific vocations and develop analytical thinking. In a nutshell, it is an introduction to chemistry and research designed for 16-17 years old students.
During 13 sessions spread through the year, students around Catalonia discover new fields of chemistry accompanied by ICIQ’s Throughout the year, in a series of 13 sessions, students from across Catalonia delve into various aspects of chemistry under the guidance of ICIQ’s technicians, researchers, and group leaders. The program covers a wide array of topics, from sustainability-related subjects like catalysis and artificial photosynthesis to analytical methods and intriguing areas such as molecular gastronomy. What’s fascinating is that students explore these fields not just theoretically but also through hands-on lab experiments, which they particularly enjoy.
Dr. Tóth joined this program as a mentor and guide for the day. He supervised seven undergraduate students in the laboratory, providing them with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art research environment.
For five hours, these budding chemists had the chance to learn from Dr. Tóth, absorbing his knowledge and passion for chemistry. They conducted experiments, analyzed results, and engaged in stimulating discussions, all under the watchful eye of Dr. Tóth.
The “Crazy about Chemistry” program is more than just an outreach initiative. It’s a platform for inspiring the next generation of chemists, and Dr. Tóth’s involvement exemplifies this mission. His dedication to nurturing young talent and his commitment to sharing his expertise made a significant impact on the students he supervised.
